Do set aside some time for Keakapulu Flat if you're here at Kaopapawai Waterhole; do pay a visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park if you're here at Kaopapawai Waterhole. Kaopapawai Waterhole is pretty waterless usually; April is the wettest month with most rain while June is ordinarily the driest month. If only every location had this much outdoors cool things, what a great earth it would be. If you       need a site to stay Chalet Kilauea Collection is a wonderful choice; there is a great hiking trail close by called the Maunaiki Trail. This lake is so wonderful. Camping is available at Nmakanipaio Campground, and going for a hike on the Kau Desert Trail is always a great adventure. Go for a hike on the Ainap Trail, and after a long day outdoors Sea Mountain is a good site to spend a night or two. At Kaopapawai Waterhole you can see Puu Pili, and Klauea                  Gulch is a nice place to check out. Summertime at Kaopapawai Waterhole arrives with high temperatures in the 50's. Summer night lows sink down to the 30's.
