Lake Qualatchee
 | 14 miles away I notice that there is a Lake Qualatchee a few miles northwest of Cleveland, Georgia. I have never visited the site. Bartram's list of Cherokee towns included a ''Qualatche,'' but it was reportedly on the Flint River, too far away to have a connection with this lake. But, Mooney says a town called Qualatchee was somewhere on the headwaters of the Chattahoochee River. Not much else seems to have been written about the town, and I am not yet sure how the lake came to have its name.... |

Enota Resort and Campground
 | 18 miles away ...ps) or tent camping. The cabins are rustically charming and recently more modern motel-type rooms have been added within view of the waterfall. Some of the structures on this property are CCC-built and the staff also honors Enota's Cherokee heritage as well, with a sweat lodge, sacred circle, drumming and the occasional Native American presenter, who happened to be leading the Sweat Lodge ceremonies when we were there this spring. We discovered that Enota is a non-profit ecological and teaching facility as well, and we campers and cabin folk mingle at the weekend breakfasts in the Lodge with the staff and the volunteers who help run the campgrounds, the gardens or the animal farm. This campground has newly remodeled restrooms and plentiful showers and also has trampolines for the kids (and me!) We were there as a church retreat group was departing and they had a big group sing the evening before in the newly-enclosed pavilion. Occasionally, since I am a musician, I will even lead a sing-along around the campfire in front of the Lodge. Like I said, it's a family place and even if yo... |
