     In the event that you don't mind getting drenched, you can always go whitewater paddling on Big Creek. Lakes? Sure, Shell Lake is around here. Statham Lake is a quite wet place ordinarily with a good deal of rain; the wettest month of the year is ordinarily March, that's the one that rains the most while October is regularly the driest month. This lake is so wonderful. Statham Lake is not far at all from Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta. You'll wish for more hours  
   in a day to enjoy all the entertaining things at Statham Lake. Fredrick Lake is a great lake close to Statham Lake, and whitewater paddling is fine on Marsh Creek.
All through the summer months highs here at Statham Lake reach the 80's. Summer overnight lows plunge down to the 60's. Highs through the winter are ordinarily in the 40's, and nighttime lows in the 20's for Statham Lake. Going for a hike on the Brookshire Creek Trail is always a glorious adventure,
 
               and dry warm beds await you at Oakwood at Camden Deerfield. This lake is so wonderful. There's so much to do here at Statham Lake that you need to camp here for a while, Marietta Campground is a pleasant place for that, and if you need a place to stay Doubletree Hotel Atlanta/AlpharettaWindward is a glorious choice.
If you're interested in hydro structures, you can pop by Freedrick Lake Dam; a golf course close by is Woodmont Golf Club. Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is a tremendous location in close proximity to Statham Lake, and you can stay the night at Twin Lakes Park.

My father had a home in the Echo Lake subdivision in the 1960's and the way I remember what happened to Simmons Lake was that that after Lakeside High School was built the earthen dam that held back Simmons Lake broke and that was pretty much the end of the lake. It wasn't repaired. The small lake next to Briarcliff Road was a separate lake that was fed from Simmons lake and in turn fed Echo Lake. This small lake appears from an aerial photograph to have nearly silted in. The culvert under Briarcliff Road from the small lake to Echo Lake was a favorite haunt for chasing snakes and turtles. I remember Echo Lake being dredged in the 1960's. Back then there was little Echo Lake at the other end of Echo Lake and it no longer exists. Little Echo Lake had a concrete dam that failed a couple of times and I suppose was given up on. The homes in Echo Lake subdivision sold in the 20-25K range. This area was a perfect place for my brother and me to spend summers. Dad told me years later that he wouldn't see us until dinner time in the summer because we spent all day doing things around these la...
