Chattahoochee River has a tremendous whitewater paddling spot close by. You'll need more than a day to explore everything Shellnut Lake has to offer, you can camp at White Water Express. This lake is so wonderful. This lake is so wonderful. Super 8 Motel - Forest Park/Stadium/Atl Area is a great site to get some rest, and do pop by Suwanee Lake, it's a charming lake. If you're here at Shellnut Lake, you could have a look at Angel Creek, and Overmountain Victory

| | National Historic Trail is a splendid local destination. If you like the outdoors, you'll fancy Shellnut Lake. Suwanee Lake Dam is not far at all from Shellnut Lake, and you'll meet a lot of people from Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta here. A striking lake like Forest Lake near Shellnut Lake is a fine place to visit, and a golf course close by is Lake Spivey Golf Club. winter are commonly in the 40's, and after the sun is down all through the wintertime temperatures at Shellnut Lake descend into the 20's. Shellnut Lake is a good spot to visit for more than one day, Camp Truitt-fulton is a good spot to camp nearby; if you need a place to stay Travelodge Forest Park Atlanta South is a good choice.

Buena Vista Lake
 | It's not only accessible but it's very accessible. For some bizarre reason the County put in a boat ramp, so get out there and paddle around a bit. Pick up some trash left by some people and storm runoff while your at it....I was born and grew up in the community surrounding this lake from 1955 to 1969. Too bad it is not more easily accessible....Buena Vista Lake is just a tiny pond in a city park. There is no reason for tourists to visit unless you happen to be staying in the neighborhood and want to take a walk.... |

Simmons Lake
 | 15 miles away My father had a home in the Echo Lake subdivision in the 1960's and the way I remember what happened to Simmons Lake was that that after Lakeside High School was built the earthen dam that held back Simmons Lake broke and that was pretty much the end of the lake. It wasn't repaired. The small lake next to Briarcliff Road was a separate lake that was fed from Simmons lake and in turn fed Echo Lake. This small lake appears from an aerial photograph to have nearly silted in. The culvert under Briarcliff Road from the small lake to Echo Lake was a favorite haunt for chasing snakes and turtles. I remember Echo Lake being dredged in the 1960's. Back then there was little Echo Lake at the other end of Echo Lake and it no longer exists. Little Echo Lake had a concrete dam that failed a couple of times and I suppose was given up on. The homes in Echo Lake subdivision sold in the 20-25K range. This area was a perfect place for my brother and me to spend summers. Dad told me years later that he wouldn't see us until dinner time in the summer because we spent all day doing things around these la... |
