Coosa Backcountry Trail
15 miles away
...th of a mile and lost the trail, we then back tracked about one hundred yards and I looked to my left and noticed the marker, it was straight up hill. We proceeded up the side of the mountain realizing that being in our early twenties would not save us from severe exhaustion. We found ourselves stopping every five minutes or so to catch our breath. To add to the intense climb, about half way up it started to rain which made the 40F weather a little colder. We decided we were to far into the journey now to turn back, so we pushed on. After a few hours of strenuous hiking we reached the junction of the Coosa and Appalachian Trail. We pushed on for another hour or two until we reached the top and I saw the better than I expected shelter at the summit of Blood Mountain. We staggered in about two at a time a few minutes apart, each small group repeating the same emotion of screaming here it is, or we found it, finally. We camped in the shelter with two other parties and proceeded to drink the liquor we brought with us which helped us keep our mind off the fact that the temp was falling un...

Arkaquah Trail
17 miles away
Hiked this trail with a friend on Labour Day weekend 2007 and it was one of the toughest trails that we have done. Parking at Brasstown and hiking down was pretty easy and we stopped to eat at Track Rock. Going back up to Brasstown was pretty brutal even though we are both in good shape. There are few turns or forks, which is good because the trail is NOT marked in many places. We heard reports of a copperhead and yellow jackets on the trail, but only saw red tailed hawks, bugs and worms. There is no water on this trail, but its very shady, at least in the summer. The views are nice and you are advised to take your time climbing using short steady steps. Over 11 miles of hiking total and it took a good 6 hours including rest stops, eating time, pictures, etc....

DeSoto Falls Trail
18 miles away
I was there during the weekend before the 4th. DO not plan to stay a whole day here. Have a snack see the falls and move on to other falls. I camped here and it was okay. Had a run in with a huge Timber rattler 3/4 of a mile from entrance of Desot and realized camp was below....... Go see the Waters Creek area as well. Have a great lunch for few hours at Vogel North of DeSoto....

Dicks Creek
19 miles away
Well if this is where the big waterfall is. No Iw ould not raft it. Besides if you went way too far down you will run into private proprrty and You will be in huge trouble! For below the falls there are deep pools w/ trout and signs to keep out. What a pretty picture to take. GO with the right person which in my case took the wrong person, Who likes to stop Fish for awhile, see a fall, go on to next stop.Rest, enjoy and move to Desoto or Helen etc. I plan for now on to go to this area of GA 2 to 3 times a year to see the views. Pooh on some of your state parks for camping....
