Stone Mountain Park is a tremendous local campground, and if you need a place to stay Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites LAWRENCEVILLE is a great choice. Get yourself into a kayak and hit Yellow River, and after a long day outdoors La Quinta Inn and Suites Snellville/Stone Mountain is a delightful site to spend a night or two. This lake is so wonderful. At Lake Zora Dam near Lake Zola there are some out of the ordinary things to see, and Lake Matthews is a glorious

| | lake close by. Throughout the summer months at Lake Zola temperatures are commonly in the 80's. Once the sun is down it drops down to the 60's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Lake Zola are in the 20's.

Beyond the park is unknown territory....Yellow river at Poterdale can get pretty tough after a good rain. Bring your A game!...water from 124 to porterdale is about 3 feet average in the summertime. lots of fun. easy river. clean too. lots of fallen trees in the water, great wildlife, snakes, turtles and fish. the dam in porterdale is easily passed adn the rapids following are verry shallow. email at coadydraven@yahoo.com with questions.... |
Simmons Lake

My father had a home in the Echo Lake subdivision in the 1960's and the way I remember what happened to Simmons Lake was that that after Lakeside High School was built the earthen dam that held back Simmons Lake broke and that was pretty much the end of the lake. It wasn't repaired. The small lake next to Briarcliff Road was a separate lake that was fed from Simmons lake and in turn fed Echo Lake. This small lake appears from an aerial photograph to have nearly silted in. The culvert under Briarcliff Road from the small lake to Echo Lake was a favorite haunt for chasing snakes and turtles. I remember Echo Lake being dredged in the 1960's. Back then there was little Echo Lake at the other end of Echo Lake and it no longer exists. Little Echo Lake had a concrete dam that failed a couple of times and I suppose was given up on. The homes in Echo Lake subdivision sold in the 20-25K range. This area was a perfect place for my brother and me to spend summers. Dad told me years later that he wouldn't see us until dinner time in the summer because we spent all day doing things around these la... |
