Built in the late 40's, it was the property of Martin F Hurst and his wife Mary (Fink) Hurst. The owner moved in the early sixties.

A visit to Hurst Lake is always a good idea. Yellow River is a pleasant whitewater spot close to Hurst Lake, and camping is available at Campwest Minster. Dry warm beds await you at Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites LITHONIA-STONECREST, and if you came for an overnight stay Salem Campground is a delightful site to camp.
You just can't picture the amount of outdoors cool things the area in close proximity to Hurst Lake has to offer. Lakes are such calm places,

| | why not explore Turner Lake close to Hurst Lake, and a lovely lake like Forest Lake is a great site to stop by. Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail is a tremendous place in the neighborhood of Hurst Lake; Hyatt Place Lithonia/Stonecrest Mall is a great spot to get some rest. This lake is so wonderful. wet place mostly with a good deal of precipitation; the month with most of the rain is March, and September on the other hand is the driest. At Hurst Lake through the summer highs are in the 80's while night lows are commonly in the
60's. High temperatures through the wintertime are normally in the 50's with winter lows in the 30's overnight here at Hurst Lake.

| Putting in at Killian Hill Rd , the best white water is just down river from HWY 78 to the Yellow River Park. Beyond the park is unknown territory....Yellow river at Poterdale can get pretty tough after a good rain. Bring your A game!...water from 124 to porterdale is about 3 feet average in the summertime. lots of fun. easy river. clean too. lots of fallen trees in the water, great wildlife, snakes, turtles and fish. the dam in porterdale is easily passed adn the rapids following are verry shallow. email at coadydraven@yahoo.com with questions.... |

Simmons Lake

Just thought you should know this, but Simmons Lake essentially doesn't exist anymore. I'm an Atlanta native who grew up in DeKalb County and attended Lakeside High School; back when I was a teenager I saw work done on the neighboring Echo Lake, which is surrounded by nice middle-class homes. From what I can tell, the lake was dredged, I guess in order to save it, and Simmons Lake (across Briarcliff Road) was essentially sacrificed for its sake, taking the excess silt from Echo Lake. There's still a small pond there, quite shallow, in the areas closet to Briarcliff Road and Echo Lake, but nothing like what I once knew; over the years even the trees and undergrowth have reclaimed most of the area the lake had once covered when I was a boy... |
