     Big Smoak Lake is a nearby lake that you could explore, and if you come at the right time of year, Savannah River offers some perfect whitewater. The high level of rain makes Howard Lake a rather wet place; March is the month that gets the most rain; November on the other hand is the driest. You believe that's sufficient? Just getting warmed up. Leitners Branch is a wonderful local stream. This lake is so wonderful. While you're here at Howard Lake you will  
   meet lots of folks from nearby Augusta-Richmond County, and you can stay the night at Byron Mobile Home and Camper.
A lake nearby is Beaver Dam Pond, and a fine close by hotel is Americas Best Inns-Augusta Grovetown. For the duration of the days of summer here at Howard Lake, high temperatures frequently reach the 90's while overnight lows are usually in the 60's. High temperatures during the winter are normally in the 50's, and after the sun is down during the
 
               wintertime temperatures at Howard Lake descend into the 20's. If you need a location to stay Super 8 Motel - Augusta Ft Gordon Belair is a perfect choice. There are two open spillway dams between the Hwy 28 (Fury's Ferry) Bridge and I-20: Stevens Creek Dam (at the confluence of Stevens Creek) and the Augusta Canal Diversion Dam (about a mile downstream of Stevens Creek Dam). There are no marked access points immediately on either side of either dam. Georgia Power Co. operates an electric generating facility on the Georgia (south) bank at Stevens Creek. At the Canal, since the canal immediately parallels the river some twenty feet above it, there is no river access whatsoever on the Georgia side. Portage would be recommended along private land on the South Carolina side of both dams....
