When it was first built, it was named after a guy named Haar who, along with his family was killed in a boating accident. He was president of the Savannah Outboard Motor Racing Association. After the Association, which built the lake, defaulted on its responsibilities to maintain the dam in good order, its owner Bertie D. Burpitt, changed the name to Burpitt's Lake. After the death of Mr. Burpitt, and eventual sale of the property, the lake was renamed yet again Lake Loraine, which is its name today. I know all this because Mr. Burpitt was my grandfather and I was raised on the property since before the lake was constructed. Yep, outdoors amusing stuff to do are in fact abundant here at Haarley Lake. During your journey to Haarley Lake you'll meet some people from Hinesville-Fort Stewart for sure. High temperatures at Haarley Lake during the summertime are in the 90's while night lows are generally in the 60's.
