The Border Trail is a wonderful hiking trail close to West Thompson Lake, and you certainly ought to stop by Quaddick State Park while you're here. Quinebaug & Shetucket Rivers Valley National Heritage Corridor is a good place close to West Thompson Lake; in the event that you don't mind getting soaked, you can always go whitewater paddling on Natchaug River.
