April, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest month of the year is February.
While you're here at Talmages Ice Pond you can take a hike along the Mattabesset Trail, and a round of golf at nearby Twin Lakes Golf Course
is a wonderful way to kill some time. Near Talmages Ice Pond you discover Gangway Rock which is a delightful site to check out, and Hammonasset Beach State Park is a tremendous campground nearby. This lake is so wonderful. Lots of

frequently get into the 80's, and all through the night it cools down to the 60's. During the wintertime highs are generally in the 30's; winter nights come with lows in the 10's to Talmages Ice Pond.

Call the Regional Water Authority and ask for Anita in Recreation, 203-624-6671. She'll set you up with a permit. Or you can go online, www.rwater.com. Maltby Lakes are made up of three lakes located off of Route 34 in West Haven. The permit also gives you access to Lake Saltonstall and Lake Chamberlain for fishing. Access only with Regional Water Authority permit (25$/year). Off Rt. 69, turn down Morris Road at Bethany/Woodbridge border. Left at stopsign onto dirt road, second gated entrance on right. Fishing, hiking/running, horseback riding.
Good sized lake for the area, however boating is strictly forbidden. Gorgeous, peaceful surroundings (no houses), and wildlife abounds. The deer often tolerate people closeby. The fishing can be good for the experienced bass fisherman willing to hike around to the various small, scattered areas where casting is possible. These spots are often choked with brush so accurate casting, texas-rigged soft plastic baits, and at least 8lb test line are a must. I've caught a few 4-5lb bass and some good sized pickerel.... |
