Crystal Lake Dam is worth going to if you're here; whitewater paddling is not for everybody but if it's for you then, we recommend Roaring Brook River. All the water falling down from the sky makes Crystal Lake a wet site; the month with most of the rain is May, and February is the month with the least moisture. All through the summertime at Crystal Lake highs are mostly in the 80's. Once the sun is down it sinks down to the 50's. During the winter this place
| | | |
| | gets highs in the 30's, and during the dark hours in the wintertime at Crystal Lake temperatures descend to the 10's. You absolutely should like Crystal Lake. Crystal Lake is a spot with many visitors from Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford, and lakes are such calm sites, why not go to Upper Mill Pond. This lake is so wonderful. East Round Hill Brook flows through this vicinity, and get your heart pumping on the pleasant whitewater of Hammonasset River. | |

Have a good hiking adventure along the Mattabesset Trail, and you can stay the night at Little City Campground. Dry warm beds await you at Passport Inn and Suites Middletown; Chestnut Mountain is picturesque and can be distinguished
from here. Going for a hike along the Washington Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this region; for you golfers we recommend nearby Portland Golf Course. You assume that's sufficient? Just getting warmed up. A day
on the slopes of Powder Ridge is just what you need, and while you're here you can take a hike along the Mattabesset Trail. The skiing at Mount Southington is magnificent. This lake is so wonderful. Inn At Middletown is a fine
place to get some rest. You'll need more than a day to explore everything Crystal Lake has to offer, you can camp at Camp Eagle Feather. Millers Pond State Park is both great and striking, and it's right next door to Crystal Lake; a striking lake like Zoar Pond is a great spot to go to.

Metacomet Trail
 | 17 miles away I finally located the trail entrance about 20 feet past a dirt road gate on the right that I had been using to get to the ridge line. Thanks for the help!...Gene, The trailhead at 315 and 189 is actually on Mountain Road which comes off the Rd right at the juncture. The telphone poles are blazed and the trail breaks into the woods about halfway up on the right side of the road. That is a nice section of trail although we hiked it in the rain. Happy Trails....I am having difficulty locating the trail head in East Granby at rtes. 315 and 189 that leads to south toward Penwood State Park. The trail maps say that the trail head is on Mountain Road, but there are no blue/yellow blazed trail markers on either of the two entry points into the woods. The only indication of the trail is the sign post at the bottom of the road in the three way intersection. Thanks.... |
