Mattabesset Trail; Coan Pond is not the only place nearby, Ruscom Pond is a nearby lake. All the water falling down from the sky makes Coan Pond a wet spot; May is when you get the most rain here; February is when it's the driest.
Just can't get enough of Coan Pond. Hiking along the Washington Trail is splendid fun; why not a little side journey to Hemlock Brook. If you like skiing, you're in luck; Mount Southington is next to Coan Pond; get wet paddling on
Hammonasset River. This lake is so wonderful. The top of Meetinghouse Hill is easily seen from Coan Pond, and Coan Pond is a good place to visit for more than one day, Hammonasset Beach State Park is a good place to camp nearby.
After a long day outdoors Passport Inn and Suites Middletown is a glorious place to spend a night or two; drift down the rapids of Roaring Brook River in a kayak.
