The San Juan and Jemez Mountains is great! While you're here at Van Boxel Lakes, you could also go to wonderful Mack Lake, and there is a pleasant hiking trail nearby called the Alpine Trail. Go for a hike on the Fall Creek Trail, and Black Canyon Campground is a nice local campground. This lake is so wonderful. If you need a location to stay Comfort Inn Ouray is a fine choice. What a site this is for outdoors       people. Van Boxel Lakes is a perfect site to visit for more than one day, Big Cimarron Campground is a perfect site to camp nearby, and Duckett Park is a wonderful place to check out. You just can't envision the amount of outdoors enjoyable things the San Juan and Jemez Mountains has to offer. Get yourself into a kayak and hit Cimarron River, and going for a hike on the Little Cimarron Trail is always a nice adventure. This lake is so wonderful. Swanson Lake                  is a nearby lake that you could explore; nearby you find good sites like Fire Park Draw. At Van Boxel Lakes you don’t see much precipitation; September is when you get the most rain here, and the driest month of the year is February. Summertime highs at Van Boxel Lakes mostly tend to be in the 80's. During the moonlight hours it's usually in the 50's. During the winter highs are in the 30's while Van Boxel Lakes night low temperatures all through the winter are in the 10's. Butte Creek flows through this vicinity; get wet paddling on Cimarron River.
