    If you like lakes and you're in this part of Colorado you can check out Twin Lakes. A lake nearby is Grindstone Lake, and from Twin Lakes you get a tremendous view of Burro Mountain. What a location this is for outdoors people. This lake is so wonderful. Sliderock Basin is a pretty site any time of year, and if you yearn for a little side visit, try Windy Gap.
For the duration of the summertime months highs here at Twin Lakes reach the 70's. Summer overnight
 
   lows fall down to the 30's. Daytime highs all through the wintertime are in the 30's, and after the sun is down through the winter temperatures at Twin Lakes sink into the 0's. Whitewater paddling is delightful on Hermosa Creek, and brilliant skiing awaits you at Hesperus Ski Center. If you came for an overnight stay Kroeger Campground is a perfect site to camp; there is a great hiking trail nearby called the Highline Loop Trail.
This lake is so wonderful.
 
               Transfer Campground is a brilliant campground nearby, and Echo Basin Dude And Guest Ranch, LLC is a brilliant site to get some rest. Dolores River has a wonderful whitewater paddling spot close by, and Twin Lakes lays in the shadow of the La Plata Mountains. The Bear Creek Trail is a great hiking trail next to Twin Lakes, and dry warm beds await you at Best Western Durango Inn And Suites.
Twin Lakes gets a normal amount of annual rain; of all the months in a year August is the one with the most rain; the driest month of the year is June. Life's too short to enjoy all the fun stuff in close proximity to Twin Lakes. On a great day at Twin Lakes you can take a hike along the Gold Run Trail, and Twin Lakes is not the only location close by, Slate Reservoir is a close by lake.

Mormon Reservoir

The Mormon Reservoir is located on Hay gulch stream before it flows into La Plata River. In the late 1920's the Mormon Church in Utah paid to have the damn across Hay Gulch constructed for the Mormon village of Red Mesa. Water is stored in the reservoir until it is needed for farmers at Red Mesa. The water is released into the La Plata River and is measured for agricultural purposes during the drier part of the summer. Young men from Red Mesa built frame buildings on the rocky and wooded west hillside going into Hay Gulch. Until the damn was completed the workers stayed in these dwellings. All of the work on the earthen damn was done by hand and horse drawn equipment. Dynamite was used to blast boulders used on the damn to hold the water in place until needed. The impounded water becomes undrinkable by early summer when it has a strong odor. Water dogs (salamanders) and tadpoles become prolific as the summer advances. Summit Reservoir

Summit Lake was constructed in 1905 and reconstructed and enlarged in 1938. It is owned and operated by the Summit Reservoir and Irrigation Company. It contains 402 surfqace acres when full. The lake is stocked with fish by the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) and open for public fishing. Public access is from highway 184 on the north side of the lake. There is a boat ramp. Fishing is allowed from the bank or from hand powered or trolling motor powered boats only. The public access is maintained by the DOW. The only facilities present is a boat ramp and a pit toilet. No fires, swimming or overnight camping is allowed....
