    If you are in La Plata county it's always a good idea to stop by Taylor Reservoir. A common amount of rainfall falls here at Taylor Reservoir; most of the rain falls all through August, and the driest of the months is June. Twin Lakes is a brilliant lake in the vicinity of Taylor Reservoir, and there's nice hiking along the Highline Trail. This lake is so wonderful. Head up to Hesperus Ski Center and strap some skis to your feet, and one of the major traits of  
   the surroundings of Taylor Reservoir is Cumberland Mountain.
At Taylor Reservoir during the summer months highs are in the 70's. Summer nighttime lows sink down to the 30's. Daytime highs during the wintertime are in the 30's with winter lows in the 0's overnight here at Taylor Reservoir. You imagine that's enough? Just getting warmed up. Hiking is a popular thing to do around Taylor Reservoir; Highline Loop Trail is a great local trail; you don’t have
 
               to go far from Taylor Reservoir to see the water at Taylor Dam. After a long day outdoors Ramada Limited-Durango is a perfect location to spend a night or two, and if you come at the right time of year, Animas River offers some delightful whitewater.
This lake is so wonderful. Camping is available at Lightner Creek Campground; why not take a refreshing hike along the Goodhope Stock Driveway. Columbus Basin is a delightful location here at Taylor Reservoir, and there are other locations here than Taylor Reservoir, for example Grindstone Lake. A day on the slopes of Durango is just what you need, and glide down the rapids of Hermosa Creek in a kayak.
Life's too short to enjoy all the entertaining things in the neighborhood of Taylor Reservoir. Camping at Kroeger Campground is always a nice experience, and getting to Columbus Creek from Taylor Reservoir is trouble-free. Kennebec Pass is in the neighborhood of Taylor Reservoir and is a splendid location, and Best Western Mountain Shadows is a good location to get some rest. There are plenty of folks from Durango here at Taylor Reservoir.

Mormon Reservoir

The Mormon Reservoir is located on Hay gulch stream before it flows into La Plata River. In the late 1920's the Mormon Church in Utah paid to have the damn across Hay Gulch constructed for the Mormon village of Red Mesa. Water is stored in the reservoir until it is needed for farmers at Red Mesa. The water is released into the La Plata River and is measured for agricultural purposes during the drier part of the summer. Young men from Red Mesa built frame buildings on the rocky and wooded west hillside going into Hay Gulch. Until the damn was completed the workers stayed in these dwellings. All of the work on the earthen damn was done by hand and horse drawn equipment. Dynamite was used to blast boulders used on the damn to hold the water in place until needed. The impounded water becomes undrinkable by early summer when it has a strong odor. Water dogs (salamanders) and tadpoles become prolific as the summer advances.
