A journey to Blanca Basin revitalizes the spirit; South Zapata Lake is a good place to visit for more than one day, Pinyon Flats Campground is a good place to camp nearby. So much entertaining stuff to do in the Sangre De Cristo Mountains, not enough time. Going for a hike on the Huerfano Trail is always a good adventure, and Days Inn Alamosa is a pleasant spot to get some rest.       One of the major characteristics of the surroundings of South Zapata Lake is Blanca Peak; if you're looking for a tremendous journey, Great Sand Dunes National Monument is rather near. If you want a tremendous time in the great outdoors, just come on down to South Zapata Lake. Since you might be in a lake visiting mood you can always stop by close by Pioneer Lake, and swing by North Fork South Zapata Creek it's a good spot to stop at. Through the long summer                  days here at South Zapata Lake, high temperatures mostly reach the 80's with nighttime lows in the 50's. Highs during the winter are regularly in the 30's with temperatures at South Zapata Lake dipping down into the 0's during winter nights. This lake is so wonderful. Not far from South Zapata Lake, you'll hit upon Blue Lakes which is a picturesque lake, and you can go for a hike on the Strawberry Trail. This lake is one of the great places here in the Sangre De Cristo Mountains. There are brilliant spots to discover along the Ute Trail, and Great Sand Dunes Oasis is a great campground nearby. This lake is so wonderful.
