Whitewater paddling is not for everyone but if it's for you then we recommend Rio Grande, and lakes are such calm places, why not take a look at Pass Creek Lake. Shaw Lake is one of the lakes here in the San Juan and Jemez Mountains.
Shaw Dam is a stunning location close to Shaw Lake; after a long day outdoors Allington Inn and Suites is a great location to spend a night or two. Shaw Lake is pretty waterless frequently; July is when you get the most rain here while June is commonly the driest month.
