Petroleum Lake is not the only place nearby, Anderson Lake is a nearby lake, and Petroleum Lake is brilliant enough to spend more than a day at, Portal Campground is a brilliant local campground. Not enough hours in a day to enjoy this site. Dry warm beds await you at Limelite Lodge, and don't leave Petroleum Lake without first going for a hike along the Star Trail. This lake is so wonderful. Skiing at Aspen       Highlands is one of those things you just must do, and there's whitewater on Roaring Fork for all you adrenaline rush seekers. You can never get enough of the great skiing at Aspen Mountain; splendid hiking is available along the Timberline Trail. After a long day outdoors The Alpenblick By Aspen Lodging Company is a good place to spend a night or two, and it's a tremendous idea to explore Galena Creek. At Petroleum Lake you don’t see much precipitation;                  August is the month that gets the most rain; February is when it's the driest. This lake is so wonderful. Camping at Dorchester Campground is always a magnificent experience; if the weather is gorgeous, you obtain a great vista of Larson Peak from Petroleum Lake. Through the summer, highs regularly are in the 70's at Petroleum Lake, and throughout the night it cools down to the 40's. Daytime highs through the winter are in the 30's, and nighttime lows in the 0's for Petroleum Lake.
