The beauty of Carter Lake is reason enough to stop by. Not much rainfall falls here at Carter Lake; most of the snow falls throughout December, and June is when it's the driest. This lake is so wonderful. Dry warm beds await you at Super 8 Motel - Gunnison/Crested Butte. Life's too short to enjoy all the enjoyable stuff in the vicinity of Carter Lake. You get a great sight of Quartz Dome from Carter Lake; camping at Gold Creek Campground is always a perfect
   experience.
But wait, there's more enjoyable stuff to do in the Sawatch Range. There is a wonderful hiking trail in the neighborhood of Carter Lake called the Gunsight Trail, and whitewater paddling is brilliant on Taylor River. Not enough hours in a day to enjoy the Sawatch Range. The best way to spend a winter day is on the slopes of close by Monarch, and if you desire a little side visit, try Bear Gulch. This lake is so wonderful. On a great day at Carter

Lake you can take a hike along the Onemile Trail, and if you have the time, Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park is a national park worth visiting.
There are other locations here than Carter Lake, for example Boulder Lake, and if you came to camp Comanche Campground is a delightful place to do that. If the weather is good here at Carter Lake, you can go for a hike along the Gunsight Trail, and Mill Lake is a fine lake nearby. Mosca Campground
15 miles away
We've camped here since our now 40ish childrlen were young. They are now taking their children there. Mosca is beautiful both to the eye and the heart. It is a little more difficult now that there is no potable water, but one can use lake water for dishes, and must bring in drinking and cooking water.Fishing is great - the deer put on a show eve4ry night. The camp hostess, Mary, is there is to help you with problems, and to give great advice.Other than the water problem, this is the greatest camp ground I've ever occupied!...

North Fork Reservoir
18 miles away

...xpect from a real Colorado ski area. Abundant natural snow (350+ inches) and friendly people are two of our strongest attributes. You can walk from your car right to the lifts, prices are reasonable, and the runs flow naturally back to the base area. At Monarch you'll lose the crowds but not your friends.
Monarch is a family favorite because of great snow conditions and easy access to the mountain. Having one base area makes it convenient to drop off the little ones in the Children's Center, pick-up rental equipment, sign up for ski school and get on the slopes in a timely manner. Lift lines are a rarity and you will regularly find ski runs to yourself.
Looking for great powder, spectacular views, 1000+ acres of expert terrain, steeps, trees, cliffs, and bowls? You found it with Monarch Mountain. Check out the 130 acres of hike-to terrain in Mirkwood Basin from the top of the Breezeway Lift. Monarch Mountain Snowcat Tours offers some of the best Snowcat skiing in the state-guests enjoy skiing/riding in closely spaced trees, variable snow conditions and extremely steep slopes....
