Woods Lake is a quaint little lake tucked away between the mountains. It can be busy during peak season, but on an off-day, it is a great place to find peace and quiet. Good fishing, photography and nature.

Known for it's fantastic terrain and incredible amounts of annual snowfall, Kirkwood Mountain Resort is a ''must-see'' for visitors to Lake Tahoe. Round Lake
This small ''round'' lake is the beginning of the ''Upper Truckee River'' which flows into Lake Tahoe, and the outflow is known simply as the ''Truckee River'' which ends up flowing into Pyramid Lake, in Nevada. Compared to further south in the Sierra Nevada range the local scenery is not as majestic but is indeed pretty, easy to hike and unlike very high altitude locations, offers better campsites. The lake contains one species of trout, the Lahontan Cutthroat. Back in the early 1970's I managed to catch and release a couple dozen specimens weighing between one and two pounds. The fish are classically well-marked and the flesh is a pronounced pink. I have found over several trips that the lake fish are harder to catch than the fish in the outflow canyon. ...

...sort has offered a home-away-from-home for winter enthusiasts who are looking to get back to the basics. Sierra loyalists don't want fancy shops or fine-dining on the mountain. They want snow - and lots of it. They want steeps and trees and terrain parks. Maybe a beer at the end the day. That is what Sierra Resort delivers. Yeah, we're keep?n it real. Just ask a local.

Sierra Resort is located right on the western edge of the Sierra Nevada mountains, which not only makes it the closest resort to Sacramento and the Bay Area, but also positions it perfectly to receive generous snowfall from the storms that come in off the Pacific Ocean, dry out as they cross the Central Valley, and then slam into the 10,000 foot peaks surrounding Lake Tahoe. These storms deliver an annual average of 480 inches of snowfall. Sierra Resort's north-facing slopes keep the snow in great condition days after a storm while wind-protected lifts enable skiers and riders to access that snow even on stormy days. Minimal snowmaking means that the surface conditions stay smooth and soft rather than becoming h...

Will it be 34 miles of wide-open, groomed cruisers, 1,600-foot plunges in the double-black canyons or the most outrageous tree skiing in North America? Is it the 80-foot jumps in High Roller Terrain Park, or a thrill ride on the 3,300-foot-long Heavenly Flyer, the longest zip line in the continental U. S. ?

And when the sun goes down, there's a veritable Pandora's Box of choices and temptations. On-mountain exhilaration yields to après ecstasy in the form of Vegas-style action, all-night dance clubs, world-class entertainment and five-star dining.

Sand Flat Campground
15 miles away
Went there for the first time. It's definitely on the 'go back again' list. The road down is pretty rough. My explorer handled it with zero problem. I ran it in 2wd mode on the way back up just to make sure that a normal car could make it. The key to the road, known to the locals as 'Wolfboro road' is to take it very slow. Shift into low, and just let gravity lead you into camp. When I went, there were 2 'crossings' where you had to go into water. The water is not deep, just don't go plowing through and you'll be fine. On my way out, I was met with a Mitsubishi sedan making his way down. He was doing fine, although he was having to keep his speeds below 5mph...
