We hit it at the peak wildflower time for the yellow mule ears as far as you could see leaving from the woodchuck trailhead. Had the whole lake to ourselves all afternoon. Perfect for a swim too. Wheeler Lake is a relatively wet place regularly with a great deal of rain; all through January this area sees the most snow, and the driest of the months is July. A pleasant visit to Avalanche Meadow is a splendid way to spend an afternoon, and Bear Valley is a very popular ski area in close proximity. This place rocks, just explore all the entertaining stuff to do close to Wheeler Lake. Head up to Kirkwood and strap some       skis to your feet; hiking is a popular thing to do around Wheeler Lake; Charity Valley Trail is a magnificent local trail. All year is a delightful time in the Northern Sierra Nevada if you like the outdoors. A lake nearby is Mosquito Lake, and there's brilliant hiking along the Emigrant Trail. This lake is so perfect. After a long day outdoors Pine Cone Acre Motel is a nice place to spend a night or two; a perfect close by hotel is Harvest Inn-St Helena,                  Napa Valley. Wheeler Lake is one of the lakes here in the Northern Sierra Nevada. For the period of the summer at Wheeler Lake temperatures are regularly in the 70's. Through the moonlight hours it's generally in the 40's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 30's, and winter nights come with lows in the 10's to Wheeler Lake. Life's too short to enjoy all the entertaining stuff in the Northern Sierra Nevada. Camping at Backpackers Campground is always a glorious experience, and if you get bored of Wheeler Lake you could also pop by nearby Utica Reservoir. A glorious spot to camp here at Wheeler Lake is Pine Marten Campground, and get covered with water paddling on Stanislaus River - Middle Fork. A lake like this is too good to miss.
