Do stop by Nellie Lake while you're in this part of California. This lake is so wonderful. Hiking is a popular thing to do around Nellie Lake; Deep Creek Trail is a good local trail, and soar down the rapids of San Joaquin River in a kayak. Now, you may imagine that's plenty but there's even more enjoyable stuff to do here at Nellie Lake. A beautiful lake like Upper Horsethief Lake next to Nellie Lake is a great site to explore, and Coarsegrass Meadow is a stunning
location any time of year. This lake is so wonderful.

High temperatures through the winter are normally in the 50's, and winter nights come with lows in the 30's to Nellie Lake. This lake is one of the great places here in the Central Sierra Nevada. If you need a place to stay Bigwood is a great choice, and you can hit the slopes at Sierra

               Summit nearby.
Now, you may imagine that's a heap but there's even more amusing stuff to do here in the Central Sierra Nevada. The Bobs Flat Trail offers hiking at its best, and lakes are such serene places, why not stop by Hidden Lake. And if that's not sufficient there's loads more amusing things to do in the Central Sierra Nevada. Here at Nellie Lake you can make out Jump Off Point, and Nellie Lake is a nice place to visit for more than one day, West Kaiser Campground is a nice place to camp nearby. From a rainfall point of view Nellie Lake is a quite common place; the month with most of the rain is January while July is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
Stay the night at Billy Creek Lower - Sierra National Forest; there's delightful hiking along the Red Mountain Trail.

Mammoth Pool Reservoir
Too windy. Lake level drops significantly starting in July with severe hazards. Don't waste your time....Myself and my brother have been camping at Wagners Campground at Mammoth Pool Reservoirs since the 70's.  We grew up every summer here and now we have our families and friends that join us every summer.  Its a beautiful, peaceful and fun place to raise your kids on camping.  Boating is great on the lake since you can sneak in some great water for catching some BIG AIR!  with no one on the lake but maybe 1-2 boats.  Its a great place to have your kids learn all the water sports, you don't have to worry about other boaters trying to run them over!!!!! as most lakes are!!!  SEE YA THERE!!!...

Sierra Summit
3 PHOTOS
Sierra Summit is located in the Sierra National Forest, just 65 miles northeast of Fresno at Huntington Lake. The resort offers over 1600 feet of vertical serviced by seven chairlifts and 4 surface lifts with terrain to suit all ability levels. There is slopeside lodging at the Sierra Summit Inn with a full service rental and repair shop, sports shop and snowsports school. Sierra Summit has invested heavily in snow making allowing us to offer consistent snow coverage on most runs all winter long. Our snowmaking also allows for an earlier season opening as well as allowing skiing and riding well into April during most seasons. The resort continues to provide the best winter experience at a tremendous value with money-saving options such as the Stay and Play lodging special, $20 high school Sundays, a Learn to Ski and Snowboard Guarantee and a spring season pass special. Visit www.sierrasummit.com for details....

Rainbow Lake
13 miles away
Rainbow lake, as well as numerous other lakes in the Dinkey Lakes Wilderness Area are well worth the moderate effort it takes to visit. Rainbow lake itself is cupped between a low granite ridge and a steeper, curving granite wall. It is a beautifully clear lake populated with large numbers of rainbow trout which I assume gave it the name. Information, registration, and restrictions can all be obtained at the Ranger station located in the town of Prather. We camp at this lake at least twice a year, and it is always one of my favorites....

Jackass Lakes

Went the ''difficult'' way with my family and I agree... do not stop at the Jackass Lake trailhead off of Beasore Rd unless you want a very challenging hike up +/- 2k in elevation change. Go further to Norris lake trailhead and hike up. Beyond the hike (both my 7 and 5 yr olds made it) the lake is nice and the views are awesome!!!!...
Jackass Lakes is a very beautiful lake and the trail leading there is quite enjoyable. I have made two seperate trips to the Lower lake, but I've yet to continue on up to the higher lake. There are two different trails that I know of leading to these lakes. The first I hiked with my girlfriend JB, and the trailhead can be found right off of Beasore Rd. The marker for the trailhead is just off the road on your right. The trail begins just across the street from the marker. This particular trail is VERY challenging. Only suggested for hikers in good shape or really looking for a workout. The hike took up about 3+ hours one-way to complete, and the entire trek was done at a pretty steep incline. Just when we had reached the lake a ranger informed us that nobody goes that way because it's too difficult...they use the OTHER trail. (great) So, the next trip I made I used this other trail, which is accessible by the Norris Creek trailhead. (This trailhead offers at least 3 different opportunities for hiking trails and destinations.) Using the Norris trail proved much easier and boasted clas...

Spotted Lakes
18 miles away
My family and I horse packed into Spotted lakes years ago. Can you still go in by horse? If so can someone give me a name of a company that does that. Thanks...You can't see Gale Peak from Spotted Lakes, Red Top and Sing Peak dominate the views and you must cross-country over to Chain Lakes if you want to see Gale Peak. All peaks are great day hikes that provide fantastic view of the Ansel Adams Wilderness as well as the east side of the Ritter Range. The trail to Spotted Lakes is faint and difficult to find and also difficult to stay on even if found ... that's what makes it a great place to go, few people can find it and it has a unique beauty being an atypical lake, i.e. not round or oblong but actually a series of canals connected by wider ''lake'' sections. Great rocks for diving and sunning yourself, rock climbing too....

Lost Lake
18 miles away
It is still lost. We tried several roads to get there today and had no luck. We even got directions from Jones Store and still didn't make the connection. We've actually ben there and stayed several days many years ago but still couldn't remember how. Still lost!...

Jackass's Meadows Campground
19 miles away
I've been to the campground and it is a great area; however, it is NOT an arid environment as the description says.? It is located at over 7000 feet in a forested area.? In addition, there is NO access to Devils Postpile (or the Mammoth area, as is implied by the lodging links). The campground is located at the end of the road and there is no road pass over the Sierra anywhere in this area. This campground is seasonal and is snowed in completely in the winter. ...

Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park

Kings Canyon has this great cave you can go into with all kinds of cool formations....
