     Thompson Dam is a lovely site near McGee Lake, and if you get bored of McGee Lake you could also check out close by Lower Buffalo Corral Reservoir. This lake is so wonderful. While staying at McGee Lake you could always explore Cape Canyon; you can hit the beach if you want, Empire Landing is practically right here. Throughout the months of summer, highs usually are in the 80's at McGee Lake while night lows are typically in the 60's. The wintertime brings highs  
   down to the 60's; through the dark hours in the wintertime at McGee Lake temperatures fall to the 40's. A great close by hotel is Catalina Island Seacrest Inn, and Ben Weston Beach is rather close by if you're in a beach type of mood.
Just can't get enough of McGee Lake. A perfect place to camp here at McGee Lake is Avalon's Hermit Gultch, and Hotel St. Lauren is a fine spot to get some rest. McGee Lake is a location that is reasonably dry typically; January is
 
               the month that gets the most rain; the driest month is July. The peak of Mount Banning can be seen from McGee Lake, and camping at Two-harbors is always a great experience.
Buffalo Springs Reservoirs is a nearby lake that you could explore.

Ben Weston Beach
Ben Weston Beach is accessed primarily by boat because it is a 14mile strenuous hike from the nearest town (Avalon) on Catalina Island. You will not be ''sleeping in your car'' as the write-up above suggests. The nearest road access is gate accessed and a very expensive ($40 one way) taxi ride from Avalon. Beautiful beach YES, but don't expect to carry lawn chairs and a cooler to this one....

Hi, please take a look at the attached photo.  I took it today in La Jolla Canyon, at the water fall (dry now).  Notice that a large rock appears to be loose and or without support.  It looks like the rock is supporting the trail above.  Someone should take a closer look at that rock.  In heavy rain it could come down.  It looks unstable....
