A visit to Lake Engle is always a good idea. So many enjoyable things to do in the Southern Sierra Nevada, not enough time. There's nice hiking along the Bull Run Cattle Drive, and camping is available at Evans Flat Campground. While you're here at Lake Engle, you could also check out charming Lake Stockton, and get yourself into a kayak and hit Kern River. This lake is so wonderful. Lake Marion is a nearby lake that you could stop by; camping at Davis Campground is always a brilliant experience. And that's not all you can do here at Lake Engle. Don't leave Lake Engle without first going for a hike along the Virginia Trail, and there are some good whitewater spots on Kern River. This lake is so wonderful. nearby is Basket Pass.
A perfect close by hotel is Best Western Hill House. Shirley Meadow has glorious slopes and a friendly staff, and you'll meet a lot of people from Bakersfield here. Summer brings highs in the 90's to Lake
Engle, and the night is somewhat chillier of course, usually in the 50's. Through the winter highs are in the 50's, and after the sun is down during the winter temperatures at Lake Engle plunge into the 20's.
Lake Engle is located
in the Southern Sierra Nevada. There's no way somebody can get bored here in the Southern Sierra Nevada. Good hiking is available along the Old Sled Trail; on a wonderful day you acquire a splendid sight of Basket Peak from Lake Engle.

...the middle of some class VI rapids (IE unrunable) There are actually two putin locations.
1. LAT 35.439250 LON -118.802450 This put in is impossible to get to without trespassing. So you need special permission. It's located right below the Rio Bravo Hydroelectric Dam. This section is actually a class IV followed by two class V's. I've done the entire Kern, it's definitely V. You can only do this extra section during very high water years because the Power plant diverts most of the water along this stretch.
2. LAT 35.429084 LON 118.825602 Also, on private property with no public access. Only Search and Rescue, Kayak Olympic Team, and River's End Rafting have access to this putin. There is also a public access point on racheria rd. There is a little trail to get there just past the gated community gates. I believe there is still a sign. It's not a long hike. That point gives you 5 miles of very fun class II and III rapids, swimming areas, rope swings, etc. Be aware that many people have died along this section of the river because they were not wearing a life jacket.
