Round Lake
This small ''round'' lake is the beginning of the ''Upper Truckee River'' which flows into Lake Tahoe, and the outflow is known simply as the ''Truckee River'' which ends up flowing into Pyramid Lake, in Nevada. Compared to further south in the Sierra Nevada range the local scenery is not as majestic but is indeed pretty, easy to hike and unlike very high altitude locations, offers better campsites. The lake contains one species of trout, the Lahontan Cutthroat. Back in the early 1970's I managed to catch and release a couple dozen specimens weighing between one and two pounds. The fish are classically well-marked and the flesh is a pronounced pink. I have found over several trips that the lake fish are harder to catch than the fish in the outflow canyon. ...

Grouse Lake
12 miles away Great hiking, the trail starts at Wrights Lake, which is a beautiful lake in its own right, and heads up. If your looking for a good walking trail I would suggest staying on the Wrights Lake ''loop'' trail that circles the lake. But if you want a good hiking/climbing trail the Grouse Lake hike is the one for you. Even in late August the wild flowers were still in bloom and when you reach the top you cannot ask for better views of the surrounding area. From certain points in the trail you can see Ice House Lake as well as looking down on Wrights Lake. I am a bit on the older side so I stop and rest 3-4 times on the way up and it took me a little over 2 hours to reach the top, the last 10-15 minutes were rather steep, but well worth it. There are 2 more lakes beyond Grouse Lake that are an easy walk....

Utica Reservoir
18 miles away 1 PHOTO First Canoe trip here back in 1992. Last trip 4th of July 2006. Great lake to kayak. Last Trip many kayakers. The road is car accessible but rough in spots. Campers at boat launch (hand launch only) are often a drunken rowdy group. Bear warnings now posted but not back in the 1990's. Good fishing. Lake feeds to Union below. Do not expect fish there. DFG is not stocking in 2009. Lake is lowered most years for power generation. Several Islands to camp on. Short off trail hike to Elephant Rock and Summit lakes for die hard trail blazers. Not far from Spicer Meadows. Mid week non holidays expect minimal use. ...
Salt Springs Reservoir
19 miles away I went to Salt Spring years ago, launched my boat, and boat camped and fished for a few days. I planned the same trip yesterday. We went in when still dark down a narrow 18 mile road from HWY 88. When we got to the dam, we found that the boat ramp was closed to trail launching. There is a small sign that says so near Hwy 88, but its real easy to miss. We read up on Salt Springs in several publications. Nowhere did it mention no boat launching!!! The ramp is still there, but blocked off. I wish PG&E would fix that!...
Sand Flat Campground
19 miles away Went there for the first time. It's definitely on the 'go back again' list. The road down is pretty rough. My explorer handled it with zero problem. I ran it in 2wd mode on the way back up just to make sure that a normal car could make it. The key to the road, known to the locals as 'Wolfboro road' is to take it very slow. Shift into low, and just let gravity lead you into camp. When I went, there were 2 'crossings' where you had to go into water. The water is not deep, just don't go plowing through and you'll be fine. On my way out, I was met with a Mitsubishi sedan making his way down. He was doing fine, although he was having to keep his speeds below 5mph...
