This lake is one of the great places here in the Northern Sierra Nevada. This lake is so wonderful. There are some tremendous whitewater spots on American River - South Fork, and camping is available at Gerle Creek - Eldorado National Forest. From a rainfall point of view Depot Lake is a quite typical site; the month of January is the wettest with most of the rain while July is generally the driest month. Whohoo, so much amusing stuff in one place! Depot Lake

After a long day outdoors Best Western Placerville Inn is a good site to spend a night or two; whitewater paddling is not for everybody but if it's for you then, we recommend Cosumnes River - Middle Fork. A delightful site to camp here at Depot Lake is Black Oak Stumpy Meadows - Eldorado National Forest, and if you get bored of Depot Lake you could also visit | |

Oxbow Reservoir
 | 16 miles away The reservoir is very nice to visit it is God''s country. Don't trash it....Located only a couple hours driving time from Sacramento, this small finger reservoir will delight you with its wintry mood and tranquil waters. The reservoir is nestled at the bottom of a deep gorge carved by the mixed waters of the Middle Fork of the American and Rubicon rivers. If you arrive after a recent snowfall, the sight of a white-cloaked canyon gorge, with dazzling sunlight reflected by ice crystals hanging from bare branches, will take your breath away. Upon stepping out of your vehicle, your breath will cause steamy vapors to billow around you. With each intake, the sharp scents of winter, the smell of new snow and the tartness of wet rock mixed with damp vegetation, will excite the senses.... |
Stumpy Meadows Lake
 | 18 miles away Do not go to Stumpy Meadows. You will not like the horrible screech of the osprey and eagle as they swoop down to steal our fish, nor will you appreciate the lack of television or telephone reception. Naw, go to the river, and I will see if I can scare off those pesky birds with my patented `stare from afar'. I will let you all know when it is again safe to drive up here...... |
