Feather River - South Fork
 | 13 miles away First this run should be considered a Class V run. There are a lot of tricky rapids and a typical class IV boater will find it very challenging. It's not a class IV run. It's remote, the water is cold and the days are typically getting shorter as the season is in late September and early October.
You can easily run it on an afternoon ONLY IF you know the run very well and can run everything with out scouting. For folks who have never seen the run before plan on a long day. Get an early start (10AM) and plan to be on the water until late afternoon.
Carry sleeping bags and warm clothing if you've never done the run before. There have been quite a few epics on this run with people being caught unprepared. The nights are very cold this time of year.

Young America Lake
 | 18 miles away 1 PHOTO I fished this lake a couple of years ago, after a long hard hike through roocks and brush from Upper Sardine Lake, I found the lake FULL of stunted Brook trout, the Golden Trout may have all died out due to someone planting these brookies into the lake, probably an air drop by a lost fish and game dept. airplane. The hike in and out feom below is miserable and hazardous, from the upper trail, it might be better. The photo here is from above. All in all it was a huge disappointment as far as the trout were concerned!... Small glacial Lake or tarn. Rockbound; located on the north side and in the shadow of the Sierra Buttes in a spectacular setting. Frozen much of the year. Route in is cross country - no formal trail. Stocked with golden trout.... |
