The river serves as a border between Placer and El Dorado counties, and offers challenging whitewater rafting opportunities for experienced paddlers. Grouse Lake
16 miles away Great hiking, the trail starts at Wrights Lake, which is a beautiful lake in its own right, and heads up. If your looking for a good walking trail I would suggest staying on the Wrights Lake ''loop'' trail that circles the lake. But if you want a good hiking/climbing trail the Grouse Lake hike is the one for you. Even in late August the wild flowers were still in bloom and when you reach the top you cannot ask for better views of the surrounding area. From certain points in the trail you can see Ice House Lake as well as looking down on Wrights Lake. I am a bit on the older side so I stop and rest 3-4 times on the way up and it took me a little over 2 hours to reach the top, the last 10-15 minutes were rather steep, but well worth it. There are 2 more lakes beyond Grouse Lake that are an easy walk....
Bridal Veil Campground

Stumpy Meadows Lake
17 miles away Do not go to Stumpy Meadows. You will not like the horrible screech of the osprey and eagle as they swoop down to steal our fish, nor will you appreciate the lack of television or telephone reception. Naw, go to the river, and I will see if I can scare off those pesky birds with my patented `stare from afar'. I will let you all know when it is again safe to drive up here......
Lake Sterling
17 miles away The road up to Lake Sterling is 4x4 only with sheer cliffs in some spots with shale rock that wants to slide out from under your tires. I saw a well equipped 4x4 truck attempt the road and have half of the rock road crumble away underneath the truck like a mini avalanche. It took until the following week to get the truck out of the canyon, but only took 2 hours for the medivac chopper to get there. Don't bring a trailer, definitely do bring spare tires and plenty of water if you do get stuck. No Verizon cell service out there either....
