Onion Creek Campground
11 miles away
You cannot get close to this campground in January under 10+ feet of snow. Sure its 3.5 miles from Ice Lakes Lodge on a bumpy dirt road, getting to some of the other spots they mentioned would be quite a trek especially if not in a 4x4 or dirt bike. Very rugged terrain....

Lake #3 lies a couple of miles inside the Desolation Wilderness Boundary. Upon arrival, you find yourself along a lake which is beautifully cradled against the Crystal mountain range. ...hildren to for their first day out on snow. There is no long haul carrying gear from a far off parking structure. It's car to slopes with little effort. The lifts are all within site. The niche Soda carves is one that takes families into the sport without immersing them into high priced, high paced resorts that can be all too intimidating. The snow tubing is all about big smiles and tummy ticklers. Its got all the atmosphere of fresh snow, beautiful mountain scenery and an escape from all that is hectic below the tree line. Kids line up each and every weekend to enjoy.
Planet Kids, geared for children ages 8 or younger and under 42'' tall now has 2 tubing carousels, a tubing lane and more! Planet Kids' main feature is a NEW Moving carpet designed to help kids go up the small slope and teach them how to get down. Just a short 40 foot slope gives kids plenty of room to learn how to stop and turn. Open daily from 10am to 3pm, rental equipment is included in the Planet Kids package.

The streaming Rubicon River just northeast of Eleven Pines Road. The river serves as a border between Placer and El Dorado counties, and offers challenging whitewater rafting opportunities for experienced paddlers. ya its cool...first time i went there...i had a blast...i guarantee i am coming back ti snowboard...AAA++++...Man, this place is tiny. I like it that way, it's very cozy and inspiring....Boreal is a great little ski area, plenty of fun runs and good snow. It's a lot smaller than most ski areas around here which is of course both good and bad. But for a resort of this size it's perfect....

Salmon Lake
15 miles away
An easy hike from the trail near Hyusink lake.  Typically very few hikers/campers at this lake (nice!).  A stunning view from the high rocks Southwest of the lake itself.  I don't have a paicture to upload, but imagine massive granite outcropping, Juniper and evergreens, a small intimate mountain lake, and you are there! ...

Donner Lake
16 miles away
Looking for campgrounds around Donner lake. Fee free if so. Fishing is great. The land is wild and you can still get away from life in a 45 min drive....

Grouse Lake
16 miles away
Great hiking, the trail starts at Wrights Lake, which is a beautiful lake in its own right, and heads up. If your looking for a good walking trail I would suggest staying on the Wrights Lake ''loop'' trail that circles the lake. But if you want a good hiking/climbing trail the Grouse Lake hike is the one for you. Even in late August the wild flowers were still in bloom and when you reach the top you cannot ask for better views of the surrounding area. From certain points in the trail you can see Ice House Lake as well as looking down on Wrights Lake. I am a bit on the older side so I stop and rest 3-4 times on the way up and it took me a little over 2 hours to reach the top, the last 10-15 minutes were rather steep, but well worth it. There are 2 more lakes beyond Grouse Lake that are an easy walk....

Bridal Veil Campground

WHEN does Bridal Veil open?...

Stumpy Meadows Lake
17 miles away
Do not go to Stumpy Meadows. You will not like the horrible screech of the osprey and eagle as they swoop down to steal our fish, nor will you appreciate the lack of television or telephone reception. Naw, go to the river, and I will see if I can scare off those pesky birds with my patented `stare from afar'. I will let you all know when it is again safe to drive up here......

Lake Sterling
17 miles away
The road up to Lake Sterling is 4x4 only with sheer cliffs in some spots with shale rock that wants to slide out from under your tires.  I saw a well equipped 4x4 truck attempt the road and have half of the rock road crumble away underneath the truck like a mini avalanche.  It took until the following week to get the truck out of the canyon, but only took 2 hours for the medivac chopper to get there. Don't bring a trailer, definitely do bring spare tires and plenty of water if you do get stuck.  No Verizon cell service out there either....
