High Emigrant Lake
 | 1 PHOTO I went and was swarmed by literally thousands of mosquitoes.... High Emigrant Lake and the surrounding area is the most beautiful place I believe I have ever visited. I went in late July and there were still snow patches on the mountains. I swam in the lake and it was FREEZING, but refreshing as we stopped by the lake on day 3 out of 7 on our backpacking trip. It is difficult to get to this lake, but it is worth it. I will go back one day. I would live there if I could. The surrounding lakes are nice too. Its a very calming atmosphere on a nice day and there are basically no mosquitoes which is a BIG plus! It is a beautiful place. Go there!... |
Dorothy Lake
 | To get to Dorothy Lake in the north part of Yosemite is a HIKE… Would take a good long day to get there, if I started before sunrise and Leavitt trail head on Sonora Pass (108).... |
Leavitt Lake
 | I went to Leavitt lake just yester day beautiful lake we caught about 10 fish all rainbows but one brook...I spent many a fishing trip at Leavitt Lake. Once everyone got over altitude sickness the fishing was great. Water and the sky clear and blue. Walked in one late winter. It was a challange but worth the adventure. The kids never failed to catch limits and we all enjoyed sharing with the few people who ventured up the hill to fish. Even saw a bear or two off and on. I will have to dig out some pictures and post them.......ith our Ford Expedition. 4 wheel drive would be helpful, but may not be neccessary as long as the road is dry. A high road clearance vehicle would be recommended however.
Very beautiful area off of Hwy. 108 just over the Sonora Pass heading east. Watch closely for the road/sign. Short afternoon thunderstorms a possibility. Great fishing for mostly brook trout. Tried hiking up to Latopie Lake where golden trout are supposed to reside, but didn't quite make it. We did however make it over to Koenig Lake which is fairly close to Leavitt. Decent camping sites. Bring your own firewood, drinking water, and toilet facilities...this is remote primitive camping via automobile at it's best.
Not a whole lot of forest around as you're above the timber line just under 10,000'. Saw other campers there during our stay. Took the dogs & cut them loose as they had a good time, too. Plenty of shoreline access everywhere, and a trail that encircles the lake. When we get back up there, hopefully soon, we hope to either try a small boat or float tubes. Boat wise I would stick with a non powe... |
Clark Fork Campground
 | 13 miles away The Clark Fork Campground has a number of nice sites. Most of the campers have trailers or RVs. The campground has pit toilets that are clean and relatively pleasant. There is a shower facility--bring plenty of quarters for your shower. The fishing in the Clark Fork River is good. The Forest Service plants trout every week. There are plenty of nice side creeks such as Cloudburst and Arnot that are good fishing too. The hike up the trail along the upper Clark Fork to the waterfall is a very nice hike. You will enjoy Clark Fork campground. My family for three generations and over 50 years has been camping here.... |
Herring Creek Reservoir
 | 14 miles away As of this year Fish & Game wont be planting the rez... Oh well there'se always Pinecrest.... |
Dodge Ridge
 | 16 miles away Dodge Ridge is a great place for families and beginner skiers! You can't lose your kids like you can at the bigger resorts. They have a great all-day ski school program. They recently put in a new lodge, now all they need is some snow-making equipment....Dodge Ridge takes great pride in their reputation as a family-friendly destination and the new spacious Family Lodge that opened last season was designed with your family in mind. Cherry Lake
 | 16 miles away Chery lake was a bummer, lots of biting bugs lousy fishing. Long drive to nothing, bummer…But do check out lake beardsey, it's awsome. ... |
Burgson Lake
 | 19 miles away 1 PHOTO Went there 8/29/09.
Found it on the Stanislaus Nat'l Forest map. No trail on the map for Burgson Lake, however, we did find a well worn footpath down to the lake. There were boy scouts there and also a forest service crew disassembling fire rings. The swimming was okay, but we're pretty sure there might have been leaches. We hiked in from the Wheat's Meadow Trail. It was about six miles round trip. On a scale of 1 to 5, we rate this hike a 3. 5 for difficulty. Enjoyed the hike. It's a nice trail through rugged terrain.... Oh this lake is on the maps, just doesn't have a trail to it. I came in on my horse from the Wheats Meadow side. Wow! What a long granite climb down into it, but well worth it as no one knows it's there. I've even asked some of the old timers up here where I live, and they've never heard of it.... |
Badger Pass
 | 27 miles away Badger Pass is the perfect place to learn to ski or snowboard. It has a really long bunny slope, and all the other trails are pretty easy too. The problem is that once you know how to ski without a V-shape thingy the place has little to offer. The staff is very friendly though.... |
Bear Valley
 | 28 miles away Lots of really great runs, too many to name. I go here as often as I have a chance.... |
