You'll meet a lot of people from Birmingham-Hoover here; Pelham Koa Kampground is a brilliant campground nearby. All the water falling down from the sky makes Old Lake a wet location; March is the month that gets the most rain; October meanwhile is the driest month. This lake is so wonderful. Get yourself into a kayak and hit Cahaba River, and if you need a spot to stay Holiday Inn Express Birmingham I-65 South (Pelham) is a good choice. During the summertime

Daytime highs through the wintertime are in the 50's; after the sun is down during the winter temperatures at Old Lake dip into the 30's. close proximity, and you don’t have to go far from Old Lake to spot the water at Oak Mountain Old Lake Dam. You just can't imagine the amount of outdoors exciting stuff the area in the neighborhood of Old Lake has to offer. Get soaked

 | Just stopped here on our way north from the Florida panhandle.? Great stopover spot, extemely convenient to I-65.? Clean, neat campground, great bathrooms and showers, friendly, well-informed staff, and the area has all the basics travelers like us are interested in---food, shopping, RV stores, food, food, etc.? I know this would also be a nice spot for a longer stay.... |

 | 10 miles away ...wed by a run produced by the current. And one was just a long series of wide wave trains. I did enjoy the rapids but even a novice paddler with a few trips under their belt could handle this section. The only bad part was the long flats inbetween the rapids. I was lucky in that I timed my trip two days after a heavy rain so the current was nice and steady. If not for that I would have been exhausted from paddling across the flats. Luckily the scenery is good and there is plenty of wildlife to enjoy. The put in at Lovic bridge is tricky. Its a pretty steep grade and full of mud and sand. I ended up just getting in my canoe and slidding down the hill into the water. Thats a good way to flip so take a friend and you could rope your boat down much easier. The take out at Grants Mill is alot nicer. It has a nice gravel parking lot and a concrete ramp down to the river with a concrete docking pad in the water.
