Bailey Gap is a pleasant place to look at; paddling on Cahaba River is so much fun. This lake is so wonderful. Enjoy a round of golf at Eagle Point Golf Club not far from McDavid Lake. For the period of the warm months at McDavid Lake highs are ordinarily in the 80's while night lows are mostly in the 60's. The winter comes with highs in the 50's while the cold winter nights at McDavid Lake are in the 30's. Holiday Travel Park is a good campground nearby,

| | and after a long day outdoors Wingate by Wyndham Birmingham is a good place to spend a night or two. This lake is so wonderful. Jeb Branch is in close proximity to McDavid Lake and is always a diversion to check out, and probably you're looking for nearby lakes? Sure, Blue Pond is just a very short distance away. perfect whitewater paddling spot nearby; there are plenty of folks from Birmingham-Hoover here at McDavid Lake. McDavid Lake is a reasonably wet place mostly with a lot of rainfall; the wettest month of the year is regularly March,
that's the one that rains the most, and the driest month of the year is October. Now, you may imagine that's heaps but there's even more entertaining stuff to do here at McDavid Lake. This is a fine region for people who like lakes. Fowler Lake is a lake close by, and Oak Mountain Lodge is a great place to get some rest.

 | ...he only bad part was the long flats inbetween the rapids. I was lucky in that I timed my trip two days after a heavy rain so the current was nice and steady. If not for that I would have been exhausted from paddling across the flats. Luckily the scenery is good and there is plenty of wildlife to enjoy. The put in at Lovic bridge is tricky. Its a pretty steep grade and full of mud and sand. I ended up just getting in my canoe and slidding down the hill into the water. Thats a good way to flip so take a friend and you could rope your boat down much easier. The take out at Grants Mill is alot nicer. It has a nice gravel parking lot and a concrete ramp down to the river with a concrete docking pad in the water. You NEED to go look at the take out before you go on your trip though. The take out is nice but its positioned weirdly. You come down river to it after your last rapid and if the water is up or moving along well then you really have to back paddle to make the docking pad. Clean, neat campground, great bathrooms and showers, friendly, well-informed staff, and the area has all the basics travelers like us are interested in---food, shopping, RV stores, food, food, etc.? I know this would also be a nice spot for a longer stay.... |
