Dry warm beds await you at Fairfield Inn Birmingham Inverness; Lake Dixie is a nearby lake that you could stop by. This lake is so wonderful. If you're here at Heather Lake and you like golf, you can stop by Greystone Golf and Country Club. Heather Lake sees pretty high levels of rain; all through the month of March you get the most rain around here, and October is when it's the driest. lake is so wonderful. You can run the rapids of Cahaba River in the neighborhood of Heather Lake, and Heather Lake is a great site to visit for more than one day, Pelham Koa Kampground is a great site to camp nearby. Bailey Gap
is in close proximity to Heather Lake and is a pleasant place; City of Hoover RV Park is a great campground nearby. Through the summer months at Heather Lake temperatures are frequently in the 80's, and during summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. All through the winter highs are in the 50's, and night lows in the 30's for Heather Lake.

 | ...e foot falls followed by a run produced by the current. And one was just a long series of wide wave trains. I did enjoy the rapids but even a novice paddler with a few trips under their belt could handle this section. The only bad part was the long flats inbetween the rapids. I was lucky in that I timed my trip two days after a heavy rain so the current was nice and steady. If not for that I would have been exhausted from paddling across the flats. Luckily the scenery is good and there is plenty of wildlife to enjoy. The put in at Lovic bridge is tricky. Its a pretty steep grade and full of mud and sand. I ended up just getting in my canoe and slidding down the hill into the water. Thats a good way to flip so take a friend and you could rope your boat down much easier. The take out at Grants Mill is alot nicer. It has a nice gravel parking lot and a concrete ramp down to the river with a concrete docking pad in the water. Clean, neat campground, great bathrooms and showers, friendly, well-informed staff, and the area has all the basics travelers like us are interested in---food, shopping, RV stores, food, food, etc.? I know this would also be a nice spot for a longer stay.... |
